A little about me...
My name is Franziska Gillner and I was born in Hamburg, Germany. I have three brothers and parents who support me every step of the way. I graduated from school last year and I wanted to do something new after that, something where I focus on other people in need. I already had the plan to do a year of service for three years now and finally I got the chance to be part of this amazing program.
Why Vincentian Volunteers ...
Several months before graduation, I got an e-mail from another Volunteer Program to have a look on the Vincentian Volunteers Website. After I had a look on their website and read the Volunteer Profiles, I knew I wanted to join this program because of the joy the volunteers experienced at their work placements. I now know what they meant! I am glad I made this perfect decision.
My Projects ...
I am working at the St. Vincent’s School. This is a school for children who are visually impaired. The school is focused on encouraging all the children to become independent and to integrate them fully into society. The students in the school are between ages 5 and 18. I work with students between the ages of 13 and 16. My job is to assist the teachers in the classroom where I do mostly one-to-one work as well as help supervise the break times. I love getting to know the students and learning something new every day.
My Highlights ...
My Highlights are the people I’m spending this year with. I could have never wished for nicer people to be around. The other Volunteers are making this year a year I will never forget! I really love my work placement. The kids are the nicest kids I have ever met, so caring, polite and joyful. Every day I enjoy seeing how much they take care for one another. I also love working with the staff and seeing how dedicated they are teaching the children as well as encouraging each other to give their best. I’ve never experienced a time where I woke up every day with joy and with the excitement of going to work to experience something new. This year is giving me this opportunity and I am very grateful!
