A little about me...

Service has always been a large part of my life and with each experience I have learned something new and grown from it as a result.  Joining a service program after college graduation seemed like the perfect avenue to go down.  I came across the Vincentian Volunteers Program where the values of service to the least among us, community living, and a simple lifestyle appealed to me. I knew the Vincentian Volunteer program was a perfect fit and I could not be happier with my decision!

Why Vincentian Volunteers ...

My Projects ...

I have one placement at St. Vincent’s Schools A Specialist School for Sensory Impairment and other Needs.  St. Vincent’s is a residential school and ranges from children ages 5 to 18.  A major goal of the school is for the students to be as independent as possible and to be fully integrated into society after they graduate.  I primarily work with the group called “post 16” which are the oldest students at the school, so this goal is very evident.  Many of the classes are aimed at real world living such as an enterprise class, a food technology class, and a social communication class. I work with students one-on-one, assist the teachers in the classroom in any way, and am with the students during their break times and at lunch. I absolutely love working at the school!  On each of the doors there is a sign that says, “kindness is the key to hearts” a quote by St. Vincent de Paul. This quote could not be any more true from the way the students who are partially sighted assist the students who are blind to the teachers who gladly come in on a Saturday to do a dance and sport workshop so the students can enjoy extra time together.  The love that is shared throughout the school is undeniable and it is inspiring to witness the teachers who are so dedicated and truly love what they do. I am always learning something new at the school whether it’s different techniques to teach subjects, mobility on getting around inside and outside the school, and even learning how to read and write Braille myself.  I wake up each morning with a smile on my face waiting for what the new day will bring and I couldn’t be more thankful for that!

My Highlights ...

I love every aspect of the program. I love being at the school, sharing a laugh with the students, learning new strategies on how to best teach subjects, and witnessing the teachers work hard to give their all to the students. I love being with the members of my community, learning about other cultures, eating around the dinner table, and sharing our days with one another. Some highlights include adventures to the Lake District and dealing with a broken down car, dancing in the kitchen while cooking dinner, Lia making jokes about Paul, having dinner at the headmaster’s house, and riding the zip line at the park.  Each day is different and each day I feel so blessed to be here.
